Turmeric, with its bright orange hue and pungent, earthy scent, is a rhizome revered for its culinary and therapeutic properties. When sliced or grated, the firm, crisp flesh releases a warm, peppery flavor with bitter undertones and a mustard-like aroma. Turmeric is a cornerstone in spice blends for curries, stews, and soups, and is highly sought after for its vibrant coloring in dishes. Beyond its traditional use in Indian and Southeast Asian cuisine, turmeric enlivens smoothies, teas, and marinades, adding depth and a hint of spice. This potent herb is celebrated for its curcumin content and is often incorporated into health and wellness regimens.
Hickory Hill Farm is all about family. Back in 1852, this 200+ acre plot was gifted to the family as part of a land grant for a relative's service in the Revolutionary War. Now the Certified Organic farm is run by Garry and Susan Shaw along with their daughter, Jennifer Johns, and her husband Josh. Altogether, four generations of the Shaw family are currently living on or working this plot of land. Not to mention their many chickens, hogs, sheep, cattle, and horses!
