Four Ways to Celebrate Earth Day through Actionable Change

Earth Day is an amazing time for reflection about how we can collectively honor our planet. Each day, we have opportunities to participate in Earth Day in a variety of ways, big and small! Here are four ideas to get you thinking:

Start a Garden

Tending to a garden is not only rewarding, but it can also reduce stress and can be a good way to stay active. A home garden is a wonderful way to connect with and enjoy nature while getting an extra boost of vitamin D!

A home vegetable garden can also encourage healthy eating and is a great opportunity to learn more about local food and agriculture.

Start Composting

Currently, food scraps (along with yard waste) make up more than 30% of what the average person throws away. These scraps contribute to releasing greenhouse gases and taking up space in landfills. The good news? These same scraps can be composted at home!

If you’re new to composting, there are great charts with quick tips to help you learn what is safe to compost. If you’re ready to dive in and learn the ins and outs of home composting, check out this comprehensive guide to get started.

If you don’t compost at home, send your eligible materials (such as microgreen containers and bowls from Stop Think Chew) back to Fresh Harvest and we’ll take care of it! CompostNow is also a great solution for at home compost pickup throughout the Atlanta metro area.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

The 3 R’s of Recycling (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) are a classic for good reason! These three elements are incredibly impactful when it comes to protecting our environment and give us a variety of options for keeping waste out of landfills:

  • Reduce food waste with some helpful storage tips. Our guide to storing produce for every season shares helpful tips to extend the shelf life of your fruits and veggies.
  • Reusing bags while shopping helps keep plastic out of landfills and minimizes the overall waste generated.
  • Fortunately, paper bags can double as produce storage. If you’ve used up your reserves of paper bags, Veijbags are perfect for storage to get the most out of your produce!
  • The Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) in Grant Park sorts and recycles various types of plastic, glass, single-stream items, and much more! If you have an item that your curbside recycling service does not accept, you can make an appointment with CHaRM to have it properly disposed of.

Get Creative!

If you’re feeling creative, upcycling is a great way to give new life to old materials! Not sure where to start? There are many social accounts and websites to give you some inspiration and fire up your imagination. From upcycled milk jug planters to DIY wall vases, the possibilities are endless!

No matter which of these ideas call to you, know that by being part of Fresh Harvest, you have already taken steps towards living sustainably. With every basket, you are supporting regenerative farming practices, the reuse of materials, and reduction of food waste. And for that, we are grateful to you for joining us in celebrating Earth Day each and every day.
